Biographical sketch: John Morgan Gray was born in Ontario in 1907 and was educated at private schools and the University of Toronto. He joined the Macmillan Company of Canada soon after leaving college. During World War II, he enlisted in the Toronto Scottish Regiment and was assigned overseas. After the war, he rejoined MacMillan and swiftly rose to become President of the firm, which is the Canadian offshoot of the MacMillan book publishing firm established in Britain.

Custodial history: The fonds was discovered in the records of the University of Manitoba's Office of the President (Dr. Hugh Saunderson).  The fonds was processed in 1979.

Scope and content: The fonds is comprised of the original handwritten draft, a typewritten revision and final galley proofs of the author's literary manuscript later published as Lord Selkirk of Red River (Toronto; MacMillan Company of Canada, 1963). Included is Gray's correspondence, written in the course of compiling information, and a folder full of his notes. The fonds also contains photocopies (taken from Library and Archives Canada, McCord Museum at McGill University, the British Museum, and the National Library of Scotland) of approximately 100 letters to, from and about Thomas Douglas, Earl of Selkirk, dated 1787-1826. Photographs and vital statistics are also included in the fonds.
