Biographical sketch: William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was elected Tory Member of Parliament for Newark in December 1832. Two years later, he was appointed as the Junior Lord of the Treasury and in 1835 as the Under-Secretary at the Colonial Office. In 1841, Gladstone was appointed Vice-President of the Board of Trade and President in 1843. In 1845, he resigned and rejoined government later that year as Colonial Secretary. When the Tory Party broke apart in 1846, Gladstone became a Liberal-Conservative. He returned to Parliament as Member of Parliament for Oxford University in 1874. In 1859, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer and remained in that position until 1865. As the leader of the Liberal Party, he became Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the following years: 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, and 1892-94.

Scope and content: The fonds consists of one letter from W.E. Gladstone to George Grub, A.M. (1812-1892) dated June 22, 1863, London.  George Grub is the author of An ecclesiastical history of Scotland: from the introduction of Christianity to the present time (1861).  In the letter, Gladstone demonstrates considerable support for Mr. Cheyne's work in the Church.
