Biographical sketch: Beatrice Ellen Morton-Sturdy was born in 1917 in Fort Frances, Ontario.  She married Charles Elwood Fines in 1939.  Early in her career, she was an elementary and high school teacher in Ontario and Manitoba.  Between 1967 and 1987, she held a variety of writing positions, such as editor of the newsletter for the Winnipeg General Hospital, staff writer for Health Sciences Centre, and assistant editor for Indian Record. 

Since 1958, Fines has been a successful freelance writer and has published hundreds of stories and articles for which she has won several awards.  Among other awards she has received the Margaret McWilliams medal for her book on the history of the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1976, the Nellie Anderson award for fiction, and first prize in the Margaret Laurence Home fiction contest in 1998.

Along with painting and acrylic painting, Fines spends her time as part of the Penhandler’s Club, the Canadian Authors Association, the Manitoba Writer’s Guild, the Emmanuel United Church, and the Centennial Seniors Club.  She currently resides in Winnipeg.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Beatrice Fines in 2008.

Scope and content: The fonds consists of biographical material, unpublished manuscripts, scrapbooks with published article clippings, copies of published works, and correspondence.
