Author: Wells,
H. G. (Herbert George), 1866-1946.
Title: Wenn
der Schlafer erwacht / H. G. Wells ; deutsche, vom Autor genehmigte Ubertragung
von Felix Paul Greve. --
Published: Minden i. Westf. : J.C.C. Bruns' Verlag, [1906].
Description: iv, 416 p. ; 19 cm. --
Note: See also H. G. Wells Folder in Mss 12, Divay Research Collection, Box 1
(FPG Documents): Photocopies of prefatory materials of all six of Greve's translations
into German. These were obtained from the Urbana-Champaign Wells Collection in
January 1991. --
The first three of Greve's translations -- "Zeitmaschine," "Moreau," & "Riesen" --
were sent to Wells by "F.P. Greve, Wollerau, November, 1904" with the following
manuscript dedication:
"Dear
Mr. Wells, May I send you the three first volumes of this new edition of your
works as a sign of my profound admiration?"
Of the next two, "Mond" & "Ausblicke," only the latter is autographed: "To
the Author from the translator, December 1905, Paris-Plage (Pas de Calais)." It
also has a "Vorbemerkung" or Preface, p.ix-xi, signed "Mai 1905, F.P.G.," and
a lengthy review about Wells and these translations [quite likely by Greve himself],
which is introduced by "Das Hamburger Fremdenblatt sagt uber die Wells'schen
Bucher: ... "
Greve's last of six known translations was the present "When the Sleeper Wakes" / "Wenn
der Schlafer erwacht" which, like the "Ausblicke" a year earlier, is autographed:
"To
the author from the translator, October 1906." --
Greve and Else (Ploetz, divorced
Endell, later von Freytag-Loringhoven) were back in Berlin at this time [since
early 1906]. This book also includes the review-article from the Hamburger
Fremdenblatt about Wells.
