The preface by Greve explains the princples of selection from the orig. 4 v. ed. in the "Bibliotheque-Charpentier:" aesthetics and biography have been favoured; Mme Bovary is mentioned, and there is a reference to Flaubert's travel to the Orient in a second volume of his letters [namely, Reiseblätter]. --

The pref. is signed "September 1904, F. P. Greve." -- At that time Greve & Else were likely already living in Wollerau, Switzerland.
