Author: Balzac, Honoré de, 1799-1850.

Title: Ein Junggesellenheim / Honoré de Balzac ; [die Ubersetung dieses Buches besorgte Felix Paul Greve ; ]. --

Published: Leipzig : Im Inselverlag, 1908.

Description: 361, [3] p. ; 19 cm. --

Note:
This is in fact, though there is no indication of it whatsoever, the FIRST volume of the Insel-Verlag's monumental Balzac ed. in 16 v., 1908-1911. --

Colophon, p. [363]:"Die Ubersetzung dieses Buches / besorgte Felix Paul Greve. Der / Druck erfolgte in der Spamer- / schen Buchdruckerei zu Leipzig." --

Bound in orig. light-brown linen, with gold monogramm "HdeB" on cover, & spine-title "Balzac / Ein Junggesel / lenheim." --

Title proper & Half-Titles in green capitals. --

This volume was reissued a year later, with Hugo von Hofmannsthal's introduction, which, in later eds., confirms its composition date as 1909. --

A zvab entry describes this more complete first Balzac volume, which erroneously, though likely intentionally, was dated back to 1908 as well, with the following words: "... Titel & Einband von Eric Gill. 1 Titelbild [probably, of Rodin's Balzac bust] ; XLVI (ii), 361 (3)S. ; 18.5x12 cm. ; roter Original-Leinenband mit goldgepragtem Ruckentitel & eingefasstem Monogramm des Verfassers [=HdeB]..." --

Note that this description matches the appearance of RBR's v.11, Das Chagrinleder / Meisterwerk / Sarrasine, 1909, of this same 16 v. edition. --

Unlike v. 11, which stated above the table of contents in the back, p. [413] Inhalt des elften Bandes", this version differs substantially from the one in the 10v. ed., 1923-1925 [where the "Junggesellenheim" has been demoted to Bd. 3 & contains two other titles]. This confirms A. Kippenberg's observation to Else v. Freytag-Loringhoven (21.9.1909, in: Pacey, 1976, p.549), that Greve tended to make substantial revisions from one printing to the next. --

Note:
Translation of La Rabouilleuse as Ein Junggesellenheim (p.7-361) by Felix Paul Greve; orig. published as v. 1 of the publisher's Balzac ed. in 16 vols., 1908-1911. --

The UM Libraries also own a copy of this book on 5 microfiches, filmed from the Stauffer Library, Queen's University.
