A NOTE ON THE TYPE IN
WHICH THIS BOOK IS SET
The type face which has been used in the composition
of this book is Monotype No. 8A -- which was based on a design
cut by Farmer, Little & Co. The chief characteristics of this
modern letter are: Extreme contrast between sharp, fine lines and
stems or thick parts of the letter; ceriphs are thin and perfectly
horizontal instead of the gently curving form of the old style
face; ascending and descending parts of the letters are very long
and round letters are somewhat square; the think part of the round
letters are somewhat square; the thick part of the round letters
is about the centre. This modern letter appears to best advantage
in solid composition.
