In 1907 a Royal
Commission was established to examine the government of the University
of Manitoba. The ineffectiveness of the University Council was the
Commission's primary concern. The Commission also studied the relationships
between the affiliated denominational colleges, provincial government
funding, the prospect of developing instruction, and a future permanent
site for the campus. The Commission's major recommendation was the
establishment of a Board of Governors and presidential position
to take over the University Council's administrative responsibilities.
The Commission was divided on other issues, producing three separate
reports on the future relationship between the denominational colleges
and university faculties.
This collection
contains submissions to the Royal Commission on the University of
Manitoba with testimony from affiliated colleges and other organizations.
It includes information on the history of the administration of
the University.
