The Faculty of Graduate Studies was formed in 1948 under Dean W.H. McEwen to systematize graduate study and research. While the development and teaching of graduate programs remained primarily the responsibility of the departments within the University, the Faculty of Graduate Studies established common standards and was responsible for their administration. As such, the Faculty admits all graduate students, monitors their progress and authorizes all graduate degrees.

The collection contains correspondence, reports, minutes, proposals, schedules, statistics, and clippings related to the work of the Faculty of Graduate Studies from 1960 to 1979. The files include information on research grants, the development of graduate studies programs, budgets, the Faculty's Program Advisory and Graduate and Post Doctoral Committees, and the Joint Masters Programmes developed between the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.
