Geography was first introduced into the University of Manitoba in 1949 through a single course offered in the Department of Economics and Sociology. During the following year, courses were also offered for Engineering and Architecture students. As a result of the interest shown, the University established a Geography Department for the 1951-52 academic year with T.R. Weir chosen as the department's first head.

This collection contains committee records, annual reports, departmental council minutes and correspondence, course enrolments, graduate fellowship applications, departmental council by laws, and other administrative records from 1965 to 1985. These files deal with various university and non-university organizations including the Faculty of Arts, the Centre for Settlement Studies, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the International Geographical Union, the Canadian Association of Geographers, and the Manitoba Geographical Society.
