Administrative History: The merger of the Departments
of Animal Husbandry and Poultry Husbandry and the field of Veterinary
Science Instruction established the Department of Animal Science
with Professor G.W. Woods as Head in 1937. The Departments had been
housed in the Dairy Husbandry building since 1918. With financial
support from the provincial Department of Agriculture and the support
of Dean J.R. Weir, a massive construction and staffing program began
in the Faculty that resulted in the opening of a new Animal Science
building in 1962. Almost concurrently, poultry research units, a
sheep barn, and a feed mill were constructed on campus. The first
Ph.D. students graduated from the Department in 1967. Professor
G.C. Hodgson and Dr. P.A. Kondra of the Department helped establish
the University of Khon Kaen in northern Thailand.
Custodial History: The Department transferred
records to Archives & Special Collections in 1988. In the same
year, Professor Steven Stothers, Head of the Department of Animal
Science, donated correspondence, reports and business files from
1915-1983 relating to the Department.
Scope and Content: The series consists of interdepartmental
and general correspondence, exams, papers, course notes, personnel
files, student lists, grant applications and reports. Also included
are files relating to the poultry department, buildings, the Golden
Jubilee program, diploma courses, home economics, dairy science,
and department history. The records include research data and reports
on feeding and disease control in beef and dairy cattle, sheep,
swine, and poultry. Both colour and black and white photographs
and negatives are located in PC 17.
Restrictions: Files labeled "Restricted"
contain confidential information and are not available for research
without the permission of Archives & Special Collections.
