Administrative History: The School of Agriculture
coordinates the Diploma Course in Agriculture program and offers
a variety of certificate, non-credit, and professional development
programs for the agri-food industry on behalf of the Faculty of
Agricultural and Food Sciences.Between 1906 and 1912 Manitoba Agricultural
College offered a two-year diploma course in Agriculture to students
with common school standing. In 1913 the course was extended to
three years until 1929. In 1930 the diploma program was shortened
to two years. At first the Diploma Course in Agriculture was intended
to provide vocational training to Manitoba farmers who had not completed
High School studies and obtained matriculation standing. Although
regular instruction in Home Economics began in 1911, the first diploma
course was not offered until 1920. This course covered two winter
terms of five months each and provided practical instruction in
domestic science. In 1969 the Diploma Course in Agriculture was
formally under the administration of the School of Agriculture.
Professor Eugene H. Lange, B.S.A., M.Sc. was the first Director
of the School. The program continued to offer instruction in both
farm and agricultural business.
Custodial History: The School transferred records
to Archives & Special Collections in 1988.
Scope and Content: The series consists of correspondence,
minutes, convocation lists, and course syllabi for Summer Field
Study Courses. Also included are files relating to: the Diploma
Course Committee; the Faculty Library Committee; the Faculty Curriculum
Committee; Conference Week; Agriculture Day; and the Faculty Council
of Agriculture and Home Economics. Both colour and black and white
photographs are located in PC 17.
