Title: Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences fonds, Department of Agricultural Economics series

Dates: 1908-1986

Extent: 5.5 m of textual records. -- 10 photographs. -- 3 negatives.

Administrative History: Although Agricultural Economics has been offered at the Manitoba Agricultural College since 1907, it achieved departmental status in 1915. In 1936 the department was absorbed into the Department of Political Economy, Faculty of Arts and Science. When the Head of the Department, Dr. Grant, left in 1941 to join the army, few courses were taught and little research was done until 1945. In 1954 Agricultural Economics was transferred back from the Department of Political Economy, and once more became a department in the Faculty of Agriculture and Home Economics. Commencing in 1946 a number of farm management studies were conducted in different parts of Manitoba. One of the results was the publication of an account book for farmers. Many of these account books replete with the farmer's business were returned each year to the department for analysis. An honours program in agricultural economics was offered for the first time in 1958. The Department was the first in Canada to offer a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics.

Custodial History: The Department transferred records to Archives & Special Collections in 1988.

Scope and Content: The series consists of files relating to: Farm Account and Accounting Clubs; Farm Account Books; Farm Records and Expenses; the Manitoba Farm Finance Study; the Beef and Field Cattle Study; Socio-Economic Studies and Survey of Manitoba; Small Farm Studies; Manitoba Capital and Credit Study; and Canadian Pioneer Problems Committee. Both colour and black and white photographs and negatives are located in PC 17.
