Title: Helen Promislow fonds

Biographical Sketch: Helen Promislow was born
in 1923. A lifelong supporter of the New Democratic Party, in 1980
she was elected city councilor for Kildonan Park. Promislow was
a passionate defender of Winnipeg's architectural heritage and was
awarded a distinguished service award by Heritage Winnipeg for her
outstanding contributions as a civic politician in increasing awareness
of the significance of Winnipeg's historical buildings. She would
hold her seat in council until 1989 when ill health forced her to
retire. Promislow died in 1993.
Custodial History: The fonds was donated by Hank
Promislow, Helen Promislow's husband, in 1996.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists primarily
of letters between Helen Promislow and her first cousin, author
Leon Edel. Edel is best known for his biography of novelist Henry
James. Most letters focus on personal matters or Promislow's political
career. Some letters were addressed to Promislow's husband, Hank
Promislow, after her death.
