MSS SC 162

Title: Machray Defalcation Scandal fonds

Dates: 1932-1933

Extent: 15 cm of textual records

Historical Note: John A. Machray was born in 1865 and was a prominent Winnipeg lawyer who was appointed bursar of the University of Manitoba in 1919. In 1932, he was accused of defalcating over $900 000 of university endowment funds. In a much publicized trial, he pled down to a count of defalcating $500 000. Due to his age and ill health, Machray was sentenced to only 7 years in prison. He died in 1933.

Custodial History: The fonds was originally classified as UA SC 30 but was reclassified in 2005 as MSS SC 162 to more accurately reflect its provenance.

Scope and Content: The fonds consists of two scrapbooks detailing University of Manitoba bursar John A. Machray's embezzlement of $900,000 of the University's endowment fund. Each scrapbook contains articles about the scandal from the Winnipeg Tribune and the Winnipeg Free Press.

Source of Supplied Title: Title based on contents of fonds.

Restrictions: Open to all researchers.

Finding Aid: Finding aid is currently unavailable.
