MSS SC 173

Title: Margaret Wilson Ireland fonds

Dates: 1897-1898

Extent: 0.5 cm of textual records

Biographical Sketch: Margaret Wilson Ireland was a former resident of Medicine Hat, NWT. The education department in Medicine Hat was part of the North-West Territories until the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta were created out of the Territories in 1905. Although the first schools in Alberta were founded by Catholic and Protestant missionaries in the mid-nineteenth century, the North-West Territories School Ordinance of 1884 established a dual confessional system of Catholic and Protestant schooling based on the Quebec model.

Custodial History: Pamela Whitehead donated the fonds to Archives & Special Collections in April 1999. The fonds originally belonged to the donor's sister, Margaret Wilson Ireland. Fonds was labeled as the North-West Territories Education fonds until March 2002.

Scope and Content: The fonds consists of two North-West Territories Public School Leaving Examinations booklets from June 1897 and June 1898. A photocopy of a group photograph including Mrs. Ireland and her father Thomas, owner of the local brewery, is also included.

Source of Supplied Title: Title based on provenance of fonds.

Restrictions: There are no restrictions on this material.
