Title: Red River Flood fonds
Dates: 1950
Extent: 1 cm of textual records
Historical Note: In the spring of 1950, the Red
River flooded to a level matched only by the 1997 flood as a result
of heavy winter precipitation and a quick thaw. From Grand Forks,
North Dakota to Winnipeg, Manitoba, cities and town were flooded
and thousands were forced to evacuate.
Custodial History: The fonds was formerly held
by the Reference department of the University of Manitoba Libraries.
It was transferred to Archives & Special Collections in 1983.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of an eleven
page daily summary of the progress and devastation of the 1950 Red
River Flood, and comparative analysis of other floods compiled by
the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, Water Resources
Branch. It includes river levels in Fargo, Grand Forks, Emerson
and Winnipeg, daily weather conditions, and daily summaries of activities.
