Biographical sketch: Edward Richard Schreyer was born at Beausejour, Manitoba, in 1935. After elementary and secondary schooling at Beausejour, he studied at United College, St. John's College, and the University of Manitoba. He received degrees in Arts and in Education including a MA in International Relations and Economics. Schreyer was first elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in 1958 at the age of twenty-two and was re-elected in the general elections of 1959 and 1962. From 1962 to 1965 he was concurrently on the staff of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at St. Paul's College, University of Manitoba. In 1965 he was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Springfield, Manitoba. Following changes of electoral boundaries he was re-elected in 1968 as MP for Selkirk. In 1969 he was chosen leader of the New Democratic Party in Manitoba and in the provincial election of 25 June 1969 was elected Premier of Manitoba. Throughout his two terms as Premier, Mr Schreyer also held the portfolio of Minister of Dominion-Provincial Relations. He also served concurrently as Minister of Finance from 1972 to 1975 and as Minister responsible for Hydro Resources from 1971 to 1977. After the defeat of the New Democratic government in 1977, Schreyer was appointed Governor-General of Canada, a post he held from January 1979 to May 1984. Afterwards he served as Canadian High Commissioner to Australia from 1984 to 1987. Married to Lily Schultz, the Schreyers have four children. In recent years he has taught in the Geography Department of the University of British Columbia. Schreyer is a Companion of the Order of Canada and holds Honorary Degrees from several universities. In April 2002, he was appointed Chancellor of Brandon University.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated by Mr. Schreyer in six accessions between 1989-1998. Another accessions A.03-63, A.06-21 arived in 2003 and 2006.

Scope and content: While this collection contains a few scattered records of Schreyer's service as a member of the Manitoba Legislature and as Premier, it is predominantly a record of his service as a Member of Parliament and, more especially, as Governor-General. Found here are committee papers, working files, correspondence, speeches, date books and diaries, photographs, and other records. Included also are his school papers and lecture notes. Schreyer also donated his personal library. The 2003 accrual is predominantly material from his tenure as Governor General, some N.D.P. material and other topics of interest to Schreyer.

The accession A.06-21 contains Ed Schreyer's biographical info; speeches;
research material and conferences re: environmental issues, energy resources
and new technologies; East Side Lake Winnipeg Broad Area Planning Initiative
papers; and various newspaper and internet articles re: environmental issues
and energy management.

Restrictions: This fonds is open to researchers with the exception of some financial files and government material that was marked confidential. Some of the photographs may pose copyright issues and researchers will have to get permission from the photographer before they can be reproduced.

Accruals: Further accruals to this fonds are expected.
