Aileen Garland fonds, 1892-

MSS 33

25 cm of textual records

Born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, in 1892, Garland received her BA from the University of Toronto and her MEd from the University of Manitoba. She also did some post-graduate work at Teachers' College, Columbia University, New York, and the University of Minnesota. Garland began her career as a teacher in Treherne, Manitoba. She moved to Minnedosa and then to Winnipeg in 1918, where she continued to teach for thirty-five years. For the last fifteen years of her career she was Principal of William Whyte School. On her retirement, in 1953, she returned to Montreal as research assistant to G.R. Stevens, writer of social and industrial history. Garland wrote Canada Now and Then (1956) and Trails and Crossroads to Killarney (1967).

Donated by Aileen Garland in 1980

The collection consists of historical essays on Manitoba sites and several hundred research note cards with collected data on the origin and location of place names of settlements, townships, lakes, rivers, forts, islands, creeks and other geographical sites in Manitoba. A second set of note cards provides English translations to many of the Aboriginal names. The collection also includes the author's biographical essay on Arnold Brigden.
