Biographical Sketch: Eira Charles, now known as
"Babs" Friesen, was the daughter of Major John Leslie
Charles and Helena Violet (nee Hamilton). Her brother John Hamilton
Charles was killed in action with the RCAF in 1942.
"Babs" Friesen attended the University of Manitoba from
approximately 1937 to 1938. In 1938 she was elected Lady Stick for
the University of Manitoba Science Students Association. In 1938
she was awarded a Bachelor of Science. Following her graduation,
"Babs" Friesen continued to be involved with the university
through various alumni organizations and events.
Custodial History: The Eira Charles fonds was
donated to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections
as part of the donation of Major John Leslie Charles' papers in
2004.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of both
published and unpublished textual material. A scrapbook containing
documents relating the "Babs" Friesen interactions with
the University of Manitoba from 1937 to 1958. Types of documents
in the scrapbook include clippings from university and local newspapers,
invitations and programs from university events, and class photographs.
The fonds also contains University of Manitoba Telephone directories
for 1937-1938 and 1938-1939. The fonds also contain a program from
the University of Manitoba Faculty of Science 1904-1979 celebration.
A photo album created in approximately 1929 is also part of the
fonds. The album contains photographs taken at locations throughout
the United Kingdom and Manitoba probably created by "Babs"
Friesen.
