Biography of Carol Matas

Carol Matas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1949. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1970. She then pursued a theatrical career, graduating from the Actor's Lab in London, England in 1972. She began writing as she simultaneously pursued an acting career until 1976 when she embarked on a literary career. Her first book was published in 1982. She has won international acclaim for her books for young people. The Holocaust and other facets of Jewish life are common themes in Matas's work. As well she writes fantasy, science fiction, contemporary and other works of historical fiction. She is also the author of several works of fantasy in partnership with Perry Nodelman. Her books have been translated into over a dozen different languages and boast a worldwide readership.
