Biography of Carol Matas

Carol Matas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1949. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1970. She then pursued a theatrical career, graduating from the Actor’s Lab in London, England in 1972. In 1976 she embarked on a literary career, winning international acclaim for her children's and young adult novels. The Holocaust and other facets of Jewish life are common themes in Matas’s work. She is also the author of several works of fantasy, often in partnership with Perry Nodelman. Her books have been translated into several different languages and boast a worldwide readership.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The fonds consists of personal and professional correspondence, fan mail, publicity (reviews in newspapers and periodicals, as well as reviews from websites and posters advertising her appearances), research, drafts of some of Matas's novels, and copies of her novels The Proof that Ghosts Exist, The Curse of the Evening Eye, The Hunt for the Haunted Elephant, Tales of a Reluctant Psychic, Far, a student edition of Cloning Miranda, and a Spanish-language edition of Jesper. Copies of anthologies in which Matas’s work appear are also included: A Christmas to Remember and Be a Writing Superstar. This accession also includes a DVD copy of a short documentary about Matas produced for MTS TV.
