Biography of Carol Matas

Carol Matas was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1949. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Western Ontario in 1970. She then pursued a theatrical career, graduating from the Actor's Lab in London, England in 1972. In 1976 she began her writing career, and has won international acclaim for her young adult novels. The Holocaust, immigration to North America and other facets of Jewish life continue to be common themes in Matas' work. She is also the author of several works of fantasy for young adults in partnership with Perry Nodelman. Her books have been translated into numerous other languages and she boasts a worldwide readership. She regularly publishes more than one title a year. Since 2003, Carol Matas has published several works of young adult fiction, including Rosie in New York City: Gotcha! (Key Porter Books, 2003), Rosie in Los Angeles: Action! (Aladdin paperbacks, 2004) and Rosie in Chicago: Play Ball! (Key Porter Books, 2004), The Dark Clone (Scholastic, 2005), and Turned Away: The World War II Diary of Devorah Bernstein (Scholastic, 2005). She also became a grandmother in 2004. While a Carol Matas biography is available in volume 112 of the Thompson-Gale Group’s Something About the Author, published in 2000 and at www.carolmatas.com, the curriculum vitae in box 1 of this accession is most current, as of July 2005, in regards to Matas’ publications and awards.
