Biography of Eli Mandel
Elias Wolf Mandel was born 3 December 1922 in Estevan, Saskatchewan. Following military service in World War II, he resumed his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, from which he received his M.A., with a thesis on Christopher Smart, in 1950. The next three years he spent at the University of Toronto in preparation for his Ph.D. -- Smart again being the topic. From 1953 to 1957 Mandel taught at the College militaire royal de Saint-Jean. After obtaining his Ph.D., he joined the English faculty at the University of Alberta: 1957-1967, with one year's interruption (1963/64) at York University, where he returned in 1967 for the remainder of his teaching career. His first published work appeared in 1954, in the collection of poemsTrioalong with Phyllis Webb and Gael Turnbull. Since that time Mandel has published several volumes of poetry and two volumes of criticism, and has edited several anthologies of poetry and criticism.
Apart from his major academic appointments, Mandel has taught courses and given workshops and readings at most Canadian universities as well as in other settings, in Canada and abroad (Europe, India).
By his first marriage, to Miriam Minovitch, Mandel has a daughter (Evie) and a son (Charles); by his second, to Ann Hardy, a daughter (Sara). He died September 3, 1992 in Toronto, Ontario.

Scope and Contents of the Papers
The collection reflects the work of Eli Mandel as a creative writer and as an academic scholar. There are manuscript and typescript copies of most of his poems and critical works, frequently in many drafts, as well as drafts of his published anthologies. His formal articles are supplemented by notes for his lectures to university classes and other audiences. The correspondence includes exchanges of letters with many of his contemporary Canadian writers and scholars. There is a limited amount of material concerning members of Mandel's family, especially his first wife, Miriam (Minovitch) Mandel.
