Biography of C. E. L'Ami

Charles Ernest L'Ami, fourth of six children born to Frederick George and Elizabeth Jane (Campbell) L'Amie, was born in the village of Inistioge, County Kilkenny, Ireland on September 24, 1896. About a year after his birth, the L'Amie family moved to Dundrum in Tipperary, where they remained for five years before moving to Dublin. In 1907 the family immigrated to Canada, changed the spelling of their surname to "L'Ami" and settled on a homestead near Biggar, Saskatchewan. Three years later, the family moved to Saskatoon to enable the children to resume their formal education.

C. E. L'Ami matriculated from the Saskatoon Collegiate Institute, now called Nutana Collegiate. With the outbreak of World War I he enlisted in the Canadian army in 1915, and served in France, Belgium, and Germany. After the war L'Ami worked in a bank while taking evening courses in accounting at the University of Saskatchewan. After two years, he left the bank to become a bookkeeper in the office of the Saskatoon Star . He moved to the Star's editorial department, and a year later became city editor. After the amalgamation of the Saskatoon Star and Saskatoon Phoenix , L'Ami worked as a reporter, magazine editor, and city editor.

In l922 he accepted a position with the Winnipeg Tribune . While with the Tribune he met his future wife, Christena Pearl Driscoll, who was the then working for the Tribune's , cross-town rival, the Winnipeg Free Press . Both reporters were then on "the city hall beat". They were married in 1926.

After three years with the Winnipeg Tribune , L'Ami worked eighteen months for the Winnipeg Free Press before accepting employment with the Border City Star in Windsor, Ontario. After the stock market crash in 1929, L'Ami, like countless others, lost his job. He returned to Saskatoon and eventually to Winnipeg. Without steady employment: L'Ami turned to creative free-lance writing and began to develop his literary styles and interests in a serious way.

During 1932 and 1933 L'Ami was editor of the Mirror , a weekly Winnipeg newspaper. When the Mirror ceased publication, a victim of the general economic malaise, L'Ami returned to free-lance reporting and fiction writing and contributed regularly to the Winnipeg Free Press and the Winnipeg Tribune .

In 1937 L'Ami sold $1,200.00 worth of articles and stories while doing “odd jobs" for insurance companies and radio stations. Then, thanks to a tip from John Dafoe, L'Ami applied for and obtained permanent career employment with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1938. He served as CBC press representative for the prairie region from 1938 to 1954, and as a supervisor of information services from 1955 to 1961. In addition, he was editor of the western edition of the CBC Times from 1938 to 1961.

L'Ami's literary efforts continued throughout his years with the C.B.C. In 1945, the American Slavic and East European Review published "Mtsyri" by M. Lermontov, translated by Alex Welikotny and C.E. L'Ami, and "Selected Minor Poems of Lermontov" translated by Alex Welikotny and C.E. L'Ami. In 1949 L'Ami's "Philosophy of Journalism" was published in Dalhousie Review . From 1945 to 1951 L'Ami lectured on journalism and creative writing at the University of Manitoba Evening Institute. In 1952 his novel, The Green Madonna , was published and won the Westminster Prize for fiction.

After retiring from the CBC in 1961, L'Ami continued with his journalism and other literary work and in 1965 the University of Manitoba Press published M. Lermontov: Selected Poetry , translated by C.E. L'Ami and Alexander Welikotny. In 1967 it also published Michael Lermontov: Biography and Translation by L'Ami and Welikotny.

L'Ami's connections with the CBC were not severed after his retirement. He was responsible for the radio program "Neighbourly News from the Prairies" from 1962 to 1977, and even afterwards continued to submit radio scripts.

L'Ami died October 12, 1981, shortly after donating his collection of papers to the University of Manitoba.

Scope and Contents of the Papers

The Charles Ernest L'Ami collection consists of the following: correspondence dealing mainly with his literary work, career development, and personal opinions and political views; literary manuscripts to his published and unpublished novels, short stories, dramas, and poems; articles; radio scripts; letters to editors; and various resource materials such as reviews, scrapbooks, news clippings, etc.

The collection is fairly complete and representative of L'Ami the writer. Several strictly personal letters were withdrawn from the collection while being processed and returned to the surviving son, Charles A. L'Ami of 81 Deer Lodge Street in St. James, a Winnipeg suburb. Nothing was returned or destroyed that reflected L'Ami's philosophy, interpretations, or literary endeavors.

As a local writer of only modest fame, L'Ami never established a national reputation. He was, at heart, a journalist and freelance writer, an interesting blend of the old world and the Canadian prairie with pronounced conservative and traditional leanings and viewpoints. His one major success, The Green Madonna , is not well-known today and little remembered. It may well be that the collection of unpublished works and translations possess future promise for students of Canadian literature.

Some materials were added after the Deed was signed, indeed after Mr. L'Ami's death a year later. A copy of the Deed is on file in Archives & Special Collections.
