Biography of William Harold Hunt

William Harold Hunt was born in Quebec 24 November 1884. His family moved between Quebec and Winnipeg until he finally settled in the Winnipeg area after beginning a degree in Engineering in 1907. In 1913, he graduated as a B. Sc. in engineering (Civil) and began work in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Hunt began work with the City of Winnipeg, in 1916. In 1920, he moved to Selkirk, Manitoba, and was employed as a "District Engineer" until 1950. For additional four years he supervised work on the Trans-Canada Highway between Manitoba andSaskatchewan.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The fonds consists of textual records, publications, maps, plans, and ephemera that document Hunt's education and career as a civil engineer in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Textual records and some maps relating to his service as a major in the Canadian militia are also included in the fonds. The records document Hunt's education in engineering at the University of Manitoba in the early 1900s. His work in engineering is also documented, particularly through maps, including the Falcon Lake Park, highways construction, irrigation systems, and others. His service in the military led him to document the history of various rifle regiments, the Officer Training Corps, and field engineering military training, which provides particularly valuable information on the period between the World War I and World War II military training. His interest in the Hudson Bay Railway supplies a rich documentation on the subject. Some of the ephemera Hunt collected over the years will be of particular interest. The material will be especially valuable for historical research in the history of engineering in Manitoba and Canadian militaryhistory.
