Biography of Maara Haas

Maara Haas (nee Lazecko) was born in Winnipeg on Feb. 12, 1920. At the age of fifteen she received an IODE Laura Secord award for her essay Let No Man Call Me Foreigner. She received a degree in Journalism from Berkeley University, California in 1939. She spent two years as a reporter & literary critic for the Washington Post before returning to Winnipeg. In 1964 she was awarded an Honorary LLD from the Ukrainian Free University of Arts & Sciences in London for her translations of the poetry of Taras Shevchenko into English.

Haas had a varied career as a poet, writer, playwright, actress & creative writing teacher. She had a chap book of her poetry published by Ryerson Press in 1952. Turnstone Press published Why Isn't Everybody Dancing in 1990. McGraw Hill Ryerson published her novel about growing up in Winnipeg's ethically diverse Northend in 1976. That same year her stage play Otherworlds/ Other Faces was produced by the Winnipeg YMCA. In the 1980's Haas taught creative writing in local schools, Indian reservations at Oxford House & Grand Marais & in Bermuda. She died on August 29th 2012.
