Biography of Dian Cohen

Dian Cohen, the daughter of Bernice Stern and Hyman Nusgart, was born in Winnipeg on July 11, 1932. Cohen was aware of the world of economics from a young age as her father was a grain-broker for the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. At the age of 15, she left Canada and traveled to Israel to work in a kibbutz where she picked plums and for three months, became a staunch Communist. She then returned to Canada.

In 1951, Cohen moved to London, England to become a foreign exchange clerk for Royal Insurance, Bleichroder, Bing, a subsidiary of Lloyd’s of London. While in London, she met and married famed playwright M. Charles Cohen at the New West End Synagogue on January 25, 1953. Following their marriage, the Cohens returned to Canada. They had three children together: Lisa Ruth born November 12, 1959, Nina Eve born February 22, 1964, and Tamara Geneva born July 13, 1968.

From 1953 to 1956, Cohen worked towards attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto while simultaneously working as a freelance bookkeeper. Cohen received her BA in 1956 with Majors in Economic History and Political Science. She then undertook post-graduate studies at McGill University in Banking, Public Policy, and Econometrics from 1956 to 1963. Cohen served as a teaching assistant for six of her eight years (1957-1962) at McGill. She also took an independent study program in Consumer Finance at the University of Miami in 1963.

Dian Cohen began her professional career immediately following her academic career. In 1963, she began a five year stint as a sessional lecturer in Economic Statistics at Sir George Williams (now Concordia) University. In 1964, she began her lengthy role as a syndicated economics and business commentator for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. She would remain in this capacity until 1984. In 1965, Cohen became the Research Economist and Publications Editor for the Private Planning Association (now the C.D. Howe Research Institute) and served in this role until 1970.

By 1968, Dian Cohen commenced her career as a syndicated newspaper and magazine columnist on personal money management, economic and business affairs. Between 1968 and 1988, her articles regularly appeared in ten magazines and fifteen newspapers. In 1970, Cohen developed and produced an educational kit of personal money management techniques for the Royal Bank. Entitled “Your Money Matters”, the kit was such a success that Boards of Education in every province used it to teach student fiscal responsibility. Cohen parlayed her previous successes in print and radio into a successful career as a public speaker. In 1975, she developed and marketed a series of personal money management workshops called “The Money Seminar”.

In 1977, Dian Cohen combined her talents for writing, teaching, and public speaking into an academic radio program called “Money, Power and Politics - Understanding the Canadian Economy”. She co-wrote and co-hosted the program which aired on CJRT/Open College at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. Cohen then entered the realm of television in 1979 when she accepted a position with CFCF-TV’s Pulse News in Montreal. She was CFCF’s Money Management Columnist until 1982. By 1981, Cohen returned to CJRT-FM/Open College to author and host another Ryerson credit course. This long-running course was entitled “Microeconomics/Macroeconomics”. The following year, she became a contributing columnist for Maclean’s magazine and remained in this position until 1987. Cohen’s influence now encompassed all media and she soon became one of Canada’s most well-known economic commentators.

The CTV Television Network soon recognized Cohen’s talents and popularity and hired her in 1984 to develop and host a business and economics segment for “Canada A.M.” Between 1984 and 1991, Dian Cohen became a fixture on Canadian news programs as CTV’s business and economics editor, including twice daily appearances on “Canada A.M.” That same year Cohen embarked on her tenure with CTV, she released her first book called The Next Canadian Economy . Cohen expanded her repertoire of radio programs in the mid- to late-1980s when she originated two more radio programs for CJRT/Open College. She wrote and hosted “Money, Power and Politics - How the Economy Works” from 1986 to 1989 and hosted “The Income Tax Phone In” program beginning in 1988. In the year between commencing these two new programs, Cohen released her second book, Money , for which she received a Literary Guild Award.

1989 was a year of change for Dian Cohen as she took on three new projects. She became the author and host of yet another CJRT/Open College radio program entitled “Growth Can Be Green”. In addition, she was designated as a Visiting Associate for the Americas Society in New York for one year. As part of her duties with the Americas Society, Cohen organized a conference and co-edited a book for the organization entitled To Save A Continent - Business Responds to North America’s Environmental Needs . Finally, Dian Cohen also became a columnist on pensions in the journal Benefits Canada . Cohen continued her blooming career as a popular economics author into the 1990s when in 1993 she co-authored the book No Small Change - Success in Canada’s New Economy with Guy Stanley which was a Book of the Month Club selection in 1993. The following year, Cohen and Stanley collaborated on another book called Class Action - Making the Future Work Now . Despite Cohen’s burgeoning career as a successful author, she still maintained a presence on Canadian radio and television. For three years, beginning in 1994, Cohen was co-host of a program for World Affairs/Baton Broadcasting System called “This Week in Business”. She also started writing and hosting another radio program for CJRT-FM/Open College in 1994 called “The Global Economy” and “Economics for a Global Economy”.

In addition to her many roles in the Canadian media, Dian Cohen also lent her expertise to several organizations. Cohen acted as Director for a number of companies including Noranda Forest Inc. (now Nexfor Inc.), PanCanadian Petroleum (now PanCanadian Energy Corp.), Royal Insurance (now Royal & Sun Alliance), Canadian Pacific Limited, International Institute for Sustainable Development, Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, and Second Cup. Cohen has been a part of numerous Advisory Boards, including chairing the Boards for the Government of Canada’s Business Immigration Program, the National YMCA Youth Enterprise Centres, and the National YMCA Employment Initiatives Program. She has also been a member of Advisory Councils for AT&T Canada, Monsanto Canada, the Canadian Hospital Association Vision Program, and Globe ‘92. Cohen has served as Trustee for the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Pension Plan and the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, Public Governor for the Canadian Institute for Chartered Accountants, and Regent for the Canadian Institute for Chartered Accountants. She was also a member of the Economic Council of Canada and the National Task Force on Biotechnology. Her service to the nation does not just extend to government and corporations. Dian Cohen has also volunteered her time as the Co-Chair of the Corporate Fund for Breast Cancer Research, advisor to Casey House, and a member of the Comite consultatif d’urbanisme, Municipalite de Hatley, Quebec.

Cohen’s talents as a writer have been recognized in the numerous awards she has received. In addition to the Literary Guild Award she received for Money , she was the recipient of the National Business Writing Award in 1978 and 1983. Her work for Ryerson Polytechnical Institute resulted in them conferring to her the title of Fellow in 1979. She has also been deemed a Doctor of Letters by Acadia University in 1996 and Doctor of Laws by the University of Manitoba. Cohen’s dedication to her work and to her nation have resulted in two other prestigious awards. In 1975, the YWCA of Montreal named her their Woman of Achievement, and in 1993, Dian Cohen was named to the Order of Canada.

Today, Cohen, who divorced from her husband in 1980, now lives in Quebec, continues her literary, public speaking, and consultative career. She is President of DC Productions Limited, her own communications company that specializes in economic, business, and financial analysis and strategy. Her fourth book, published in 1999, is entitled The New Retirement: Powerful Strategies to Accumulate and Safeguard Your Retirement Savings . Her most recent book, co-authored with Guy Stanley, was published in 2001 and titled Net Results . Retirement for Dian Cohen is a long way off as she continues to be one of Canada’s most prolific and well-respected economists.
