Inclusion
Criteria for
World War Two Service Database
There are several
criteria that the University of Manitoba Archives & Special
Collections have adopted in relation to inclusion of faculty, staff,
students, and alumni in the official World War Two database. These
criteria are:
Faculty/Staff
In
order for faculty and staff to be included on this list, they must:
+Have
been a faculty or staff member at the time of enlistment;
AND
+Have left the University for the purpose of enlisting in the Armed
Forces (either Canadian or foreign) or the Merchant Marine.
Students
In
order for people to be included on this list, they must:
+Have
studied at the University at some point before enlisting;
OR
+Have
been a registered student* when they enlisted;
AND
+Have
left the University for the purpose of enlisting in the Armed Forces
(either Canadian or foreign) or the Merchant Marine.
*Registered
student status includes people who were registered in all faculties
at the University (both Fort Garry and Broadway campuses), the United
Colleges, St. John’s College, St. Paul’s College, St. Mary’s Academy
& College and Brandon College (BC), (university students only)
after Brandon College became affiliated with the University of Manitoba
in 1939.
Alumni
In
order for people to be included on this list, they must:
+Have
been a graduate of the University of Manitoba when they enlisted;
AND
+Have
served in the Armed Services (either Canadian or foreign) or the
Merchant Marine during World War Two.
Post-War
Students
We were initially
unable to include students who first served in World War II and
later attended the University of Manitoba because records of military
participation were only kept by the university during the war. Therefore,
there are no public records available that tell which students served
in the war before entering university. However, we would be happy
to include such students, staff, and alumni in the database. If
you, or a relative served in the war and then went on to attend
the University of Manitoba, please contact
us with the following information:
Years of attendence
and program at the University of Manitoba,
A copy of proof
of military service (for example, enlistment papers, or a newspaper
clipping regarding the individual's war service.)
Include any
other information you would like included in the database or on
our website, including photos, diary excerpts, letters, or reminiscences.
Please
contact
us if you have further information regarding University of Manitoba
Alumni who served in World War II.
