Borrowing & Circulation
Taped Recording of Hours for all Libraries: 474-9770

Access: Most library materials held by the University of Manitoba and the satellite hospital libraries can be accessed through the Library Catalogue (BISON). Help using the Library Catalogue is available online.

Information services available from all the libraries include:

  • personal assistance in using library resources
  • electronic resources (research databases, e-journals, etc)
  • online computer searches
  • orientation tours and library instruction

Multi-lingual library services: these contacts are available to international students who want to talk in their native language about library services or collections.

Borrowing Privileges are provided to all current and retired faculty, all staff and students, and qualified external borrowers who request a card. Faculty, staff, and students must have their ID cards validated, and the cards are not transferable. Loan periods and the number of items that may be borrowed will vary.

Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges at other Canadian university libraries are available for students, faculty and staff. For more information, contact the Director's Office at 474-9881.

Document Delivery: If a library does not have what you need, the Libraries will try to get it for you elsewhere. Orders are accepted by fax, e-mail, or web forms. Contact any of the unit libraries for more information.

The Libraries will notify a patron of overdue material, bills, holds, and recalls by e-mail. When an item is recalled, the Libraries will also attempt to notify the patron by telephone. Notices are provided as a courtesy. The Libraries accepts no further responsibility for notification of due dates.

Fines are charged for all overdue library material. Most overdue materials may be returned and the fines paid at any unit library. Reserve materials must be returned to the unit library from which they were borrowed.

Payment by VISA, Mastercard or Interac for any fees owing to the Libraries can be made in person or by telephone at the Circulation desks in Elizabeth Dafoe Library (Fort Garry campus) and Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (Bannatyne campus).

Book Bins are provided for the convenience of borrowers for the return of books while the libraries are closed. However, users are responsible for the loss or mutilation of any material returned through these bins.

Electronic Library Security Systems are in operation at all library exits. If library material is not properly checked out, users will be stopped. The Libraries reserve the right to examine an individual's personal possessions and record the individual's name and ID number in such an instance.

Photocopying Machines, which take coins or copy cards, are available in all libraries. A list is available online.

Mutilation or Theft of library materials is considered by the University to be a serious offense liable to penalties sanctioned by the Director of Libraries and the President of the University.
