Free Online Symposium - September 24, 2007
A clear understanding of copyright developments in a digital age is vital for any academic. This one-day online symposium will inform University faculty on the important issues and trends arising from open access and Creative Commons movement. The symposium will increase institutional awareness of digital copyright and initiate a conversation on trends and publishing models. The symposium will bring together two of Canada’s foremost experts on digital copyright – Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair of Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa and Marcus Bornfreund, Creative Commons Canada. The symposium will explore current issues in copyright and potential trends and directions for educators.
To extend the live presentations, we will hold ongoing discussion in Moodle - allowing conference attendees to participate actively in the conference. See Moodle discussion.
Keynote Presenters:
-
Michael Geist — Cancopy Law
"The Internet and new technologies are transforming education with a new world of possibilities, yet copyright reform threatens to stifle, rather than enhance, the potential. Professor Geist will take us on a whirlwind tour of the new developments and discuss how the education community can promote a vision of copyright that benefits all Canadians."

Marcus Bornfreund — Copyright Licensing for Learning Objects
Copyright law governs the way in which we interact with creative works. This lecture introduces the spectrum of copyright licences - including all, some and no rights reserved. In order to increase the availability of learning objects in Canada, creators should be encouraged to grant permission to use, reuse and repurpose the work for educational purposes. Suggestions for "educational" copyright licensing will be made and discussion will follow.

We will be hosting discussions via Moodle in advance, during, and following the presentations. This will hopefully be an opportunity for educators to connect with each other, explore similar areas of interest, and build critically needed dialogue.
Please stop by our moodle site and register for an account (if you participated in our previous online conferences, your account will still be active): http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/moodle/login/index.php (select "create new account" tab on the middle right-hand column).

The Learning Technologies Centre would like to a gratefully acknowledge sponsorship of this event. We have run several online conferences during this last year, with great feedback. None of these would be possible without Elluminate's involvement in and support of the academic community. Elluminate also offers free 3 person vrooms - fully functional versions of the software we use for the online conferences.
