- On
November 22nd, Dr. Melanie Martin of the Department of Physics
at the University of Winnipeg presented an IIMS seminar titled
"Uncovering the mysteries of disease deep inside the living
brain: Another song and dance routine". During the seminar,
Dr. Martin discussed the most recent developments in diagnosing
and following diseases like Alzheimer's, stroke and Multiple Sclerosis,
using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). She talked about how MRIs
work, what they can tell us and how the latest research is revealing
the clues to treatment and cure.
-
In June 2005 the IIMS hosted CAIMS2005,
the 26th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Applied and Industrial
Mathematics Society.
- On
June 7, "Convexity,
Jensen's Inequality and Benefits of Noisy Mechanical Ventilation"
was published online in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.
This paper, which illustrates the benefits of research that takes
at the interface between the mathematical sciences and clinical
medicine, was authored by John Brewster (IIMS and Statistics),
Ruth Graham (Anesthesia) and Alan Mutch (Anesthesia).
This is the second paper with an IIMS connection to appear within
the past 9 months in one of the journals of the Royal Society.
In October 2004, "Modelling
Strategies For Controlling SARS Outbreaks" was published
online in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. This
paper was authored by Abba Gumel (IIMS and Mathematics) and 11
others, including Chris Bowman (IIMS Professional Affiliate and
Institute for Biodiagnostics, NRC).
- On
June 14, Alexandre Leblanc (IIMS Research Affiliate and Statistics)
presented a talk titled “Second-Order Least-Squares Estimation
in Nonlinear Regression” at the Statistical
Society of Canada Annual Meeting in Saskatoon (joint work
with Liqun Wang, Statistics). On June 15, Lisa Lix (IIMS Research
Affiliate & Community Health Sciences) presented a talk at
the same meeting titled “The Analysis of Multivariate Repeated
Measures Data with Structured Covariances”.
- John
Brewster recently gave two talks at conferences, both involving
joint research with Robert McLeod. One, titled "Blocked Fractional
Factorial Split-Plot Experiments for Robust Parameter Design",
was presented at the Spring
Research Conference on Statistics in Industry and Technology
in Park City, Utah on June 3. The other, titled "Computer
Experiments with Functional Output: Applications and Issues"
was presented at the Fourth
International Conference on Business and Industrial Statistics
in Palm Cove, Australia on May 14.
- Abba
Gumel co-chaired the JSRC-Snowbird
Conference, which was held on July 17-21, 2005 in Utah. The
theme of the conference was "Modelling the dynamics of human
diseases: emerging paradigms and challenges".
- The
IIMS seminar series is held on Tuesday afternoons at 2:30pm in
415 Machray Hall. The final talk in the 2004-05 series took place
on Tuesday, April 12. A list of speakers
for the past year is available. One topic we focused upon this
year was "Modelling the Spread of Infectious Diseases".
As well, talks were presented by the recently formed "Modelling
and Scientific Computing Group".
- Abba
Gumel spoke at the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association
held on the week of November 29 - December 2. He followed this
with a talk at the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the University
of Alberta on December 6th.
- From
July 13th to July 17th, John Brewster and Robert McLeod attended
the NPCDS/SAMSI Workshop on The Design and Analysis of Computer
Experiments for Complex Systems, held at the Banff International
Research Station. They presented talks on the use of computer
experiments to investigate models for complex systems. These complex
systems included a model for the flow of personnel through a human
resource system and an epidemiological model for the spread of
SARS.
- From
June 27th to July 3rd, Robert McLeod, Abba Gumel and Chris Bowman
attended the PIMS - MITACS - MSRI Special Program on Infectious
Diseases held at the Banff International Research Station. Dr.
McLeod presented a talk on the Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis
of a Model for SARS Transmission. Dr. Bowman presented a talk
on Assessing Control Strategies for the West Nile Virus.
