Master
of Mathematical, Computational and Statistical Sciences a
new graduate program for employees of industry, business or government
1. Introduction
The
Master of Mathematical, Computational and Statistical Sciences (MMCSS)
is a joint program of the Departments of Mathematics,
Computer Science and Statistics
in the Faculty of Science.
This program, which was approved for implementation in June,
2000, is interdisciplinary both in concept and structure. It furthers
the mission of the University of Manitoba in its intent to enhance
contacts and partnerships with outside organizations.
Students
enrolled in the program are employees of Canadian industry, business or government.
A major component of a student's program is a practicum, which is
intended to make an important contribution to a project at the student's
place of employment. While working on the practicum the student
will be jointly supervised by an Industry Advisor (from the student's
workplace) and an Academic Advisor (from the University).
2.
Admission
All
applicants will be reviewed on an individual basis, using the criteria
for admission of the Faculty
of Graduate Studies. Students are normally expected to have
completed a four-year Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Management,
Science or other related areas for entrance. In exceptional cases,
industrial experience together with appropriate university courses
may be considered to be equivalent to the completion of a four-year
degree.
Application
forms are available from the MMCSS
webpage of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. A completed application
for admission form must be submitted, together with the application
fee and supporting documents to the IIMS. Each applicant should
also send a letter indicating their current place of employment,
and well as a description of a potential topic for a practicum (if
possible).
3.
Program Requirements
A minimum
of 18 credit hours of approved course work are required for the
degree, in addition to the practicum. The specific courses to be
taken will depend on the student's background and area of concentration.
4.
Administrative Structure
The
MMCSS is administered through the Institute of Industrial Mathematical
Sciences, on behalf of the three participating departments. At present,
the Director of the IIMS is also the Coordinator of the MMCSS program.
The
Regulating Committee for the program consists of one representative
from each of the three participating departments, in addition to
the Coordinator. This committee acts as a committee for each student
enrolled in the program, guiding the student throughout the duration
of the program. This includes monitoring the student's progress,
selection and approval of courses, selection of the Academic and
Industry Advisors and selection of the Examining Committee for the
practicum. The Regulating Committee also assesses academic credentials
and makes recommendations regarding the admission of each potential
student.
The
Steering Committee (SC) oversees and monitors the program. The SC
develops policies, establishes the budget, and proposes future changes
to the program, as required. Membership in the SC consists of the
Heads of the three participating departments, the Associate Dean
of Science (Research), the Coordinator (non-voting Chair) and the
Chair of the RC (non-voting).
