On December, 2013, AMA became law. Under this legislation, the government of Manitoba will develop mandatory standards to address barriers to accessibility, with respect to five areas: customer service, information and communication, built environment, employment, and transportation.
The University of Manitoba supports the AMA. Implementing the AMA will help remove barriers to education and lead to a more encouraging and welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff. We want to promote inclusion and diversity and achieve higher levels of accessibility.
On November 1, 2015 the customer service standard came into effect. The university is currently working on a plan with identified stakeholders to address this standard which includes broad based education and training to the community. The university will have two years to become complaint with the standard.
In 2016, and every second year thereafter, the Act will require the University of Manitoba to prepare accessibility plans that address the identification, prevention and removal of barriers. This mandate applies to organizations across the province: all levels of governments, private and not-for-profit sectors.
