Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA)

On December, 2013, Accessibility for Manitobans Act, or AMA, became law. Under this legislation, the government of Manitoba is developing mandatory standards to address barriers to accessibility, with respect to five areas: customer service, information and communication, built environment, employment, and transportation. The customer service standard came into effect November 2015.

 

The University of Manitoba supports the Act. Implementing the AMA will help remove barriers to education and lead to a more encouraging and welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff.

 

Under the Act, the U of M, like all other organizations across the province, is required to prepare an accessibility plan to specifically address the identification, prevention and removal of barriers. By law, our plan needs to be updated every two years to address each individual standard once it comes into effect.

 

The Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management (OHRCM) is responsible for the University of Manitoba Accessibility Plan, the first of which was released in December 2016. The OHRCM reports to the Office of Fair Practices and Legal Affairs and together they inform accessibility-related policy at the U of M.
