Awards and Scholarships

University of Manitoba Fellowships for Master's and PhD students are available through annual competitions. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) also provide scholarships on a competitive basis but are restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. In addition, the department offers teaching assistantship opportunities and other funding sources.

Major G.E.H.Barrett-Hamilton Memorial Scholarship $12,500 January For academically excellent students in their first or second year of graduate studies
Harold E. Welch Memorial Graduate Scholarship $5,000 September For students entering, or in the 1st year of graduate study in Zoology, who does not hold a major scholarship, or similar support valued at $4000.00 or more
G. A. Lubinsky Memorial Scholarship $4000 to $5000 September For breadth and depth of scholarship and research beyond the 1st year of the graduate programme
Dr. Ken Stewart Scholarship in Aquatic Biology and Conservation Sponsored by Fish Futures, Inc. $2500/ 1 year March 1
To provide assistance and support to those individuals interested in pursuing aquatic research projects.
Roger Evans Memorial Scholarship Approx $1500 April Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum GPA 0f 3.5, who is working in the fields of animal behaviour or ecology and intends to present his/her research at a national or international conference.

Department of Botany Graduate Fellowship $2,000 TBA
Josefine C. Rauch Memorial Prize for Teaching Assistants Bookstore voucher - value varies depending upon number of Prizes. April Recognizes outstanding undergraduate teaching by graduate students. One to four awards annually
Freshwater Institute Silver Anniversary Fund Number awarded and their value determined by the selection committee - Awarded to University of Manitoba graduate students, who have supervisors at the Freshwater Institute, to attend conferences or to travel to other facilities for training.
Ileen Stewart Memorial Award TBA At the deadline for U of M bursary applications Awarded to any full-time graduate student with minimum GPA of 3.5 and demonstrated financial need based on standard U of M bursary application form.
Dr. Michael Bruser Memorial Bursary $600 October 1
Available to students currently registered in 4th year or higher in Botany or Zoology, active in Biological or Ecological studies with an interest in preservation and conservation of flora and fauna.
Manitoba Naturalists Society Scholarship $500 Early October Awarded to a student who has graduated from a university in Manitoba and who, in the September next following award of the scholarship, either enters or continues with a graduate programme in Botany, Zoology or related fields.
Oakes-Riewe Aboriginal Environmental Studies Research Award $500 to $5000 March 30
Awarded to a graduate student who is conducting interdisciplinary environmental research (integration of physical, biological, and human processes) within an aboriginal context. Application Form.
Manitoba Horticulturists Graduate Scholarship Approx. $1000 March For a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has completed one year of a master’s or PhD program, is continuing into second year, and has demonstrated achievement in horticulture research applicable to the Canadian prairies (applications through Plant Science)
Leon Provancher Prize in Systematic Zoology April For a collection or essay done by an undergraduate in an area of systematic zoology
H.E. Welch Award $750 April For a student completing a BSc honours or major in zoology or joint Botany/Zoology honours or majors with highest standing in the core courses
Botany Department Prize $200 April For highest standing in Botany honours or major, fourth year Science
Jennifer M. Shay Bursary $500 Awarded to a student in good standing in Botany or Ecology honours or major, with demonstrated financial need based on a standard U of M bursary application form
David Ian Mackenzie Medal $200 April For highest standing in Honours Zoology
J. C. Rauch Award $200 April For highest standing in ZOOL2530 and ZOOL2540 taken in regular session in the same academic year
