Research interests focused on the evolutionary, molecular and environmental physiology of mammals, particularly in relation to the adoption of aquatic and subterranean life- history traits. Evolution, conservation and radiation of molecular and physiological adaptations are elucidated by mapping these specializations onto molecular and total evidence phylogenies determined for the group in question.
Current Studies: Molecular evolution of hemoglobin O2-affinity in the Talpidae (desmans, shrew-moles and moles) and Paenungulata (elephants, sea cows and hyraxes). Metabolic and ventilatory responses of talpid moles to hypoxia/hypercapnia. Diving energetics and aquatic respiration of star-nosed moles.
