Dean's Welcome
updated 23 September 2011

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at The University of Manitoba, home to some of the best scientists, professors, and students in Canada. This is a comprehensive teaching and research Faculty, with over 200 academic and support staff members in seven departments, two institutes, and numerous formal and informal research groups. We offer a full slate of graduate and undergraduate degree programs, in the biological, physical, and computational and mathematical sciences. We currently have about 300 graduate students, and teach over 40,000 undergraduate course enrollments.

Students from the University of Manitoba have won a total of 95 Rhodes Scholarships - more than any other university in Western Canada. Our most recent, 2010 Rhodes scholar is Melissa Bailey.

The Faculty of Science is in the midst of an exciting and ongoing renewal program. We have an excellent mix of faculty members of all ages, combining a wealth of new and innovative ideas, with experience and wisdom. All our departments are dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research. Members of the Faculty of Science consistently win teaching awards, and we now host seven Canada Research Chairs.

Our campus is also undergoing an exciting renewal program.
  • Our Department of Computer Science moved into a brand new building that we are sharing with the Faculty of Engineering. This wonderful new facility is located in the heart of campus.
  • The newly refurbished Biological Sciences Building is now completed and fully occupied.
  • The Buller Building renovations are almost complete.  This massive undertaking has been 10 years in the making, and I am proud to say that we have now transformed a grand 1932 Collegiate Gothic style building into a facility with state-of-the-art teaching and research labs
Please look around. You can get to know about us, and the opportunities we can offer you, by exploring our web pages, contacting our talented team of student advisors, or visiting our departments. All the contact information can be found through our homepage.

We look forward to hearing from you, and wish you every success in your studies.
