NGC4676 - the Mice

• Taken May 22-23, 1998, at the Glenlea Astronomical Observatory, by Chris Brown
• ST6 CCD camera on the 40 cm Evans telescope, effective focal length 6400 mm.
• Field of view 4.6 x 3.5 arc minutes
• North to up, east to the left
• Clear filter exposure: 40 minutes (two 20 minute exposures were combined)
• Final image processing done in WinMIPS

Nicknamed "the Mice", these are two interacting galaxies. Gravitational forces between the two have caused the long arms of stars to be drawn away from the galaxies. The brighter galaxy has a published magnitude of 14.1 photographic (in blue light). Based on that, the brightest star in the field is about 17th magnitude and the faintest about 19th magnitude.
