Michael Freund wins Merit Award

Michael Freund, Chemistry, is the recipient of the UM/UMFA combined Research and Service Merit Award.  Freund has been involved in supporting a research team consisting of 12 researchers (including Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs), graduate students and undergraduate students). He was involved in three collaborative research projects (two funded by NSERC Strategic Grants and one funded by the Province of Manitoba and the California Institute of Technology), which has involved co-supervising an additional two PDFs and five graduate students. His research activities have resulted in a US patent and eight research articles published or in press including contributions in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (the most cited journal in chemistry) as well as other leading journals in physical chemistry and polymer science. Freund has been involved in securing approximately $2M of research and infrastructure funding in 2009.

In addition to his research activities, he has made significant service contributions. He is a member of the Royal Society’s Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the Royal Society A, Mathematical, Physical & Engineering Sciences, the co-Chair of NSERC DG Selection Committee for Chemistry, and a member of review panel for Texas' Advanced Research Program.
