6 - Former Bison football star Israel Idonije has made the 53 person
final roster of the NFL's Chicago Bears for the upcoming 2004 season.
The
6'7", 290 lb. Brandon, MB native, is the first Bison football player
to be signed and now be selected onto a NFL team roster. Bison football
head coach Brian Dobie was elated to hear the good news for the
defensive lineman.
"I
am really happy and excited for 'Izzy'. This is a gigantic step
for him and for a Canadian-born player to make the leap to a NFL
roster. Everyone at the University of Manitoba and Bison Sports
is extremely proud of his accomplishments. This shows his commitment
level to reach his goals and highlights the strengths and caliber
of CIS football."
Along
with the major announcement of Idonije making the Bears roster,
the Bison football program has reason to celebrate two more players
contributing an impact at the professional level.
Former
Bison DE Wayne Weathers was activated to the playing roster and
saw action on Monday during the annual Labor Day Classic for the
Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Current
Bison kicking coach Demitris Scouras has been working with Bison
rookie kicker Jeff Standing during the start of the season and has
now been asked to assist with the Montreal Alouettes. Scouras registered
the first points ever for the Ottawa Renegades.
