6 - The Manitoba Bisons announce the successful appeal of football
quarterback Shane Munson to be reinstated for his fifth and final
year of eligibility. This follows an earlier appeal that was denied
and announced late in July 2004.
Last season,
Munson, former Hec Crighton Trophy nominee - Most Outstanding Player
in Canadian University Football, had played one game plus started
and played just over a quarter (15:55) of a second game before suffering
a season-ending injury.
Under the old
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rules, a student-athlete who
had played more than one conference game for their respective CIS
team during one season was deemed to have met the criteria of completing
a year of playing eligibility.
Under the new
CIS resolution passed at the most recent CIS Annual General Meeting
in June 2004, the maximum number of competitions that will be allowed
in order to consider a season-ending injury appeal will be 25% of
their conference schedule. After due process, Bison football quarterback
Shane Munson was ruled to meet the conditions of the new threshold
for eligibility requirements due to the season-ending injury. He
is now eligible to play in the 2004 season.
Bison football
head coach Brian Dobie commented, "There is no question Shane
is one of the most outstanding CIS quarterbacks ever to play. His
experience and skills speak for themselves. It is gratifying that
a student-athlete is able to complete his career in a fair and just
manner that is mutually accepted to be in the best interest of the
person, the university and the CIS."
At this time,
Munson has not decided or committed about his future plans.
