Advanced Standing for Licensed Practical Nurses - University College of the North

Advanced standing and challenge for credit opportunities toward courses in the Bachelor of Nursing Program are in place for Licensed Practical Nurses who have graduated from the Diploma in Practical Nursing (DPN) program at University College of the North (UCN).

Note: Advanced standing from this program is reviewed on a regular basis.

Eligibility for Advanced Standing

  • Graduation from the Diploma in Practical Nursing program at UCN;
  • Diploma in Practical Nursing courses must be completed within 5 years of admission to the Bachelor of Nursing Program;
  • Science courses must be completed within 10 years of admission to the Bachelor of Nursing Program;
  • A minimum grade of C+ must be obtained in each DPN course;
  • A minimum of one-year of continuous work experience (either part time or full time) as an LPN; and
  • In good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM).

Advanced standing for students will be considered on a case-by-case basis if course work has been completed outside the current transfer credit limits of 10 years for non-Nursing and 5 years for Nursing courses.

                        *Credit will be given only after admission to the College of Nursing. Credit will be granted after successful completion of calculation test. Conditions: Write calculation test with other NURS 2530 students at the beginning of the term, and achieve a minimum score of 90%. Maximum of 3 attempts.

LPNs who have completed the Diploma in Practical Nursing program at UCN and received advanced standing may use the 6 hours indicated as footnote 1 above toward their admission requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing Program. Applicants are required to take an additional 24 credit hours, indicated in the table below, to attain the minimum 30 credit hours needed for admission. A minimum grade of “C” must be obtained in all University courses required for Nursing, and applicants must meet all of the admission requirements, including the University Written English and Math requirements.
