Past Guest Artists & Masterclasses MARCH 2011

The Faculty is host to many guests, and students have the privilege of studying with these guest artists through masterclasses and lectures. Here are some of our featured guests from March 2011

On March 30 the Italian composer Professor Jacopo Baboni-Schilingi visited the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. Prof. Baboni-Schilingi was the director of the Department of Education at the Centro Tempfo Reale in Florence for many years. He is presently a composition professor at the Conservatoire of Music in Montbéliard in France.

Baboni-Schilingi's composition Concubia Nocte for soprano and live electronics was performed at the mid-day recital in Eva Clare Hall.

On March 28 the Faculty at MidDay recital featured pianist Laura Loewen with special guest, Charles Castleman (violin). Mr. Castleman also conducted a masterclass with our students.

As part of the Trumpet search for the Babs Asper Professorship in Jazz Performance,  Candidate #4 Derrick Gardner gave a public performance with U of M Jazz Faculty, followed by a public lecture on March 21.

 

On March 4, the Vancouver Chamber Choir presented a choral composition workshop, with community and student observers invited to attend.VCC

The composers who workshopped their pieces were:

  • Maryanne Rumancik from Lorette, MB
  • Elise Letourneau from Orleans, ON
  • Ken Nichols from Brandon, MB

Jon Washburn (conductor of the Vancouver Chamber Choir) has done recordings and/or premieres of many major Canadian choral works.

On March 18 we hosted a Masters of Jazz Workshop with Jazz Bassist Rufus Reid.


 On March 16 we were pleased to host a Masters of Jazz Workshop with Jazz guitarist Michael Occhipinti.
