Orff Certification Program - News
Report on the

30th Anniversary of the Orff Certification Program

by Joan Linklater, program coordinator

July 2010 marked the 30th anniversary of the Orff Certification Program at the University of Manitoba.  We spent ten days of intense learning that were full of excitement, energy and joy. The success of our program is due entirely to the outstanding, internationally recognized faculty who bring a depth of wisdom, experience and passion to our program.

  • Carolyn Boyes:  Choral Techniques Levels I, and II
  • Jewel Casselman:  Recorder Levels I, II, and III
  • Joan Linklater:  Basic Orff Level I
  • Marcelline Moody:  Basic Orff Level II
  • Dianne Sjoberg:  Movement Levels I, II, and III
  • Ruth Wiwchar: Basic Orff and Choral Level III

Enrollment was good in all three levels, with students from across Canada and from all areas of Manitoba including a large number of undergraduate students from the Integrated Music Education Program at the University of Manitoba.  It was enriching to have both undergraduates and in-service teachers working together in the program and particularly exciting to have a wonderful group of level three students this year.

We all enjoyed having the course in the breathtakingly beautiful facilities at St. John’s - Ravenscourt School, in a park-like setting on the banks of the Red River.

Thank you to the Manitoba Orff Chapter for serving us a wonderful luncheon that gave the summer Orff students a chance to hear about the many ways that the MOC contributes to the strength of music education in Manitoba.

Congratulations to the 2010 Manitoba recipients of the Gunild Keetman scholarship, Courtney Richter and Vanessa Unrau, and to Sean Fitzmaurice and Krista Richard, the 2010 recipients of the Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship presented by the Manitoba Orff Chapter.

A highlight of this year’s program was the special seminars when, each morning, all three levels sang and made music together.  The students particularly enjoyed the sessions with three highly respected Winnipeg Orff specialists, Tammy MacLellan, Liz Kristjanson and Karen Tole-Henderson, two wonderful recorder sessions presented by Marcelline Moody and two sessions by our industry representatives, Chris Berti from St John’s Music and Dan Raposo from Quest Musique.

The final sharing was, as always a highlight as students presented some of their favourite pieces for each other and their invited friends.  As well as a cake to mark our 30th anniversary, Morna-June Morrow, founding president of the Manitoba Orff Chapter, spoke about some of the historic highlights of our program and presented us with a beautifully formatted 30th anniversary compilation of our program’s archives.

In July 2011 we will be offering Level I of the Orff Certification Program.  We expect that enrolment will once again be high, so please register early.
