Important dates for September 2020 entry:

January 15, 2020 - Application deadline. - closed

February 10-14, 2020 - Audition week - closed

Students will be contacted by the Music Admissions Coordinator with their audition date and time 2-3 weeks after the online application closes.

To be considered for Desautels Faculty of Music scholarships, applicants must meet the application deadline and audition during the advertised audition dates. Late applications will be accepted on a case by case basis.

Application Requirements

  • Online application
  • Two letters of reference 
  • A personal essay of 250-300 words which outlines your musical aspirations and your plans for achieving them.
  • Portfolio - For composition applicants only.

Please note, that admission may not be possible for all qualified applicants. Admission is dependent on:

  • the number of spaces available
  • the area of major practical study
  • instructor availability
  • performance & sight-reading ability as demonstrated at the audition
  • letters of reference
  • interview
  • other information provided with the application - personal essay, previous academics, etc.

Audition Requirements

Auditions will be 25 minutes in length, and may include:

  • Sight reading and/or sight singing
  • Aural & technical skills 
  • A short interview

While in-person auditions are strongly encouraged, you may audition via high-quality video recording. Contact us at if you are unable to audition in person.

Audition Fees

Jazz Auditions: Students auditioning in-person for Jazz Studies must pay a $25 fee at the time of their audition. This fee covers the expense of a rhythm section, which will be provided by the Faculty of Music. Payments must be made at the Music Main Office Room 319, Taché Arts Complex. Method of payments accepted are Visa, MasterCard, and cash.

All other areas auditions: Vocal and instrumental pieces must be accompanied. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide his/her own accompaniment during the audition process.  For a list of recommended accompanists, contact Prep Studies at  

Music Theory Entrance Exam

As part of the audition process, students will write a music theory test which assesses competency in basic music theory.  This exam is written on the day of the in-person audition and applicants have 1 hour to complete the test. Download a sample theory test

Level of Musicianship

Students have been most successful in the audition and music theory test when they have achieved a level of musicianship comparable to the Conservatory Canada or Royal Conservatory of Music:
- Grade 8 for piano and strings
- Grade 7 for voice, woodwinds and brass
- Grade 6 for organ
