Ensemble Audition Information: Jazz

2017-18 Jazz Ensemble Auditions:

While we will attempt to accommodate your ensemble preferences, the Ensemble Committee reserves the right to place Faculty of Music students in ALL of their credit ensembles.

  • All auditions will take place in the Jazz Ensemble Room - T2-272 (new building)
  • Students will all arrive at the same time and will be grouped into ensembles to audition together
  • All students must play the melody
  • All students are required to improvise at least one chorus
  • Vocalists must provide charts of their music in the appropriate key
  • Drummers must bring their own sticks, brushes and cymbals
  • All rhythm section players must display “comping” ability behind a soloist
  • All students will be required to sight-read a short passage of music

 Tuesday, September 5

10:00 am - Third and Fourth year undergrads, Post-Baccalaureate and Master's students.

Please be prepared to perform either or both of the 2 pieces listed below:

1. Rhythm A Ning (Monk) – ¼ note = 200, Bb concert for instrumentalists & vocalists
2. Like Someone In Love (Van Huesen) – ¼ note = 150, Ab concert for instrumentalists, F concert for female vocalists (suggested)

Wednesday September 6

10:00 am -  First and Second year undergrads and all transfer students

Please be prepared to perform either or both of the 2 pieces listed below:

1. Straight No Chaser - up tempo – ¼ note = 180, Bb concert for instrumentalists & vocalists
2. Yesterdays (Kern) - med tempo – ¼ note = 160, D- concert, for instrumentalists, F- concert for female vocalists (suggested)
