Ensembles - Opera Theatre

The Opera Theatre Ensemble offers voice students at all levels the opportunity to develop their performing skills in operatic repertoire. 

Opera Theatre Faculty:

Who is eligible: Students enrolled in the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music with a major in Voice. Entrance through the ensemble placement auditions at the beginning of September. Please visit the Ensemble Audition Page for more information.
   
Days & times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 am to 12:45 pm, Fall and Winter terms.
There will be some additional rehearsals. Please see syllabus for details.
   
Productions: November: an opera presented in collaboration with the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. This production is scheduled to occur in alternate years, beginning 2011.

February: an evening of excepts.

February 9 and 10, 2012: Gas Station Arts Centre.
May: School tour.
   
What you can expect: - casting auditions
- movement and acting workshops
- intensive rehearsals of excerpts which concentrate on the students' development as complete singing actors
- focus on: musical style, the importance of text and language, explorations of theatrical styles and acting techniques, characterization and physical interpretation
- Opportunities are also available for collaborative piano students to participate as accompanists for the excerpts.

 

Opera School Tour

Through May and early June the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music takes an opera production, created specifically for young people, on tour to approximately 40 schools in Manitoba.  This annual school tour is an important part of opera at the University of Manitoba as it not only provides performing experience for advanced voice students but also supports arts education in the province and helps to develop a future audience for opera.
