Russel Keith Warrian, MD, FRCSC, FACS
Dr. Warrian is a graduate of the University of Manitoba.  He subsequently pursued postgraduate training in general surgery and peripheral vascular surgery.  He then practiced for four years as the first and only vascular surgeon in the Okanagan Valley based in Kelowna, British Columbia.  Thereafter, he returned to Winnipeg to train in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery under Dr. Morley Cohen.  Following further fellowship training in cardiovascular surgery under Dr. Denton Cooley at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas with emphasis on thoracic aortic surgery, he returned to the St. Boniface General Hospital where he has practiced cardiovascular surgery to date.  He is an Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Manitoba.

He has also had significant involvement in surgical undergraduate education with the University of Manitoba as a committee member since 1984, as Supervisor of the Cardiac Surgery Clerkship Program since 1984 and as Coordinator, 3rd Year Undergraduate Surgery, St. Boniface General Hospital since 1987.  He has also been a member of the St. Boniface General Hospital Surgical Standards Committee for 20 years from 1985 to 2005. 

His most recent research activity interest has been of a collaborative nature stimulated by his friend and anesthesia colleague, Dr. Alan Mutch.  This has been ongoing since 1992 focusing on pulsatile perfusion and biovariability as a means of improving clinical cardiopulmonary bypass. 

Select honors include being named 1981 Outstanding Fellow of the Texas Heart Institute in Cardiovascular Surgery and subsequently being recipient of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Society Traveling Fellowship Award in 1982.
