Books With Wings is a
collaborative project between Canadian students and their
counterparts in
Afghanistan. Books With Wings began as the Kabul Medical Library Project,
initiated by Dr. Richard Gordon and medical students at the
University
of
Manitoba
,
involving medical students and staff at 13 universities across
Canada
.
The effort resulted in the collection and shipment of over 1700 medical
textbooks with an estimated value of over $250,000. The tremendous success of the project garnered national media coverage, and has since expanded to include a core medical book library for Al-Beeruny University led by Shira Taylor at the University of Toronto, who coined the name “Books with Wings”. Medical students at Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Western Ontario have recently joined in the effort as well.
Books With Wings is entirely non-profit and is made
possible by generous donations and the tireless work of our volunteers.
