 Biography:    
   Senior Researcher with MCHP, Professor and Senior Scholar in the Department of Community Health Sciences, and Research Associate of the Aging in Manitoba Longitudinal Study. Professor Shapiro's career has included academic, research, advisory and government positions. As the director of Manitoba Health's Continuing Care office, she implemented its single point of access Continuing Care program. Subsequently she acted as a senior policy advisor to the Minister of Health, and as Chair of the Manitoba Health Services Commission. She serves on a number of influential review panels and national health advisory committees. As an expert on aging and health, she has been an invited speaker around the world. She has been consulted by, among others, the National Health Coalition, the South Eastman Regional Health Authority, Manitoba Health's Subcommittee on Public Health Practices, and Health Canada's Home Care Development Group. She has received numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba in June 2000. She has written extensively on the determinants of health among the elderly, the predictors of their use of health care services, and the impact of social policy on community and long-term institutional care.
